Department of Biotechnology (DBT)

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is the apex department set up under the Ministry of Science and Technology in 1986 to give impetus to the development of the field of modern biotechnology in India. The Department has taken initiatives to promote transgenic research in plants with emphasis on pest and disease resistance, nutritional quality, silk-worm genome analysis, molecular biology of human genetic disorders, brain research, plant genome research, development, validation and commercialization of diagnostic kits and vaccines for communicable diseases, food biotechnology, biodiversity conservation and bio-prospecting, setting up of micropropagation parks and biotechnology based development for SC/ST, rural areas, women and for different States. They are also involved in patenting of innovations, technology transfer to industries and close interaction with them, have given a new direction to biotechnology research. The Department has also evolved necessary guidelines for transgenic plants, recombinant vaccines and drugs.

Department of Biotechnology broadly provides the following categories of support to scientists involved in research in the area of rDNA technology:

  1. Research and Development projects and Demonstration projects (Format)
  2. Projects under biotechnology-based programmes for women (Format)
  3. Proposals for conducting short term training course in biotechnology (Format)
  4. Project proposals on creation of infrastructural facilities (Format)
  5. Patent application form (Format)
  6. Information required for commercializing indigenously developed biotechnologies (Format)
